本展「Against the Grid」は、オランダを拠点に活動するアーティスト、Art van Triestによる日本初個展であり、JITSUZAISEIにとっても初となる海外アーティストの個展です。JITUZAISEI代表のMINAMI MIYAJIMAがウィーンのアートフェアに出展した際、偶然足を運んだ現地ギャラリーで彼の個展に出会いました。空間全体を巻き込みながら直線のみで構築されたそのインスタレーションは、秩序と有機性のあいだに生じる緊張をダイナミックに可視化し、会場の構造を最大限に活かした力強い展示でした。その場で受けた強い印象は忘れ難く、後日彼から直接「ぜひ展示をしたい」と申し出を受けた際、迷うことなく本展が決まりました。

Art van Triestの作品は、人間が根源的な不安や恐れに対抗するために生み出してきた「システム」や「構造」を問い直す試みです。私たちは世界を理解し制御するために、グリッドや分類、合理的な枠組みを用います。しかしそれらは、果たして現実をどれほど正確に捉えているのでしょうか。

本展では、日本で調達した素材を用い、滞在制作によって新作インスタレーションを発表します。日本は、歴史的・文化的に高度に構造化された社会でありながら、同時に地震や台風といった強い自然の力と共存してきた土地でもあります。その環境の中で培われた素材観やクラフトマンシップ、そして空間への意識は、彼の探究と深く響き合うでしょう。

JITSUZAISEIはこれまで、作家の実験性を尊重し、空間そのものと切り結ぶ展示を志向してきました。本展は、オランダと日本という異なる文化的背景が交差し、「システム」と「自然」、「構造」と「現実」が緊張関係の中で立ち上がる場となります。

グリッドに抗うことは、秩序を否定することではありません。それはむしろ、より複雑で、より多層的な現実と向き合うための姿勢です。

「Against the Grid」その構造の裂け目に、私たちはどのような風景を見るのでしょうか。

アート・ヴァン・トリースト

オランダ・ベネコムを拠点とするヴィジュアルアーティスト。インスタレーション、彫刻、パフォーマンス、ドローイング、機械制作を通して、人間が根本的な恐怖や不安と戦うために、秩序やシステムを求める欲求に対する視覚的な代替案を提示している。ヨーロッパを中心にギャラリーや美術館で精力的に作品を発表している。

Against the Grid is the first solo exhibition in Japan by Art van Triest, an artist based in the Netherlands, and also the first solo exhibition by an international artist at JITSUZAISEI.

When I exhibited at an art fair in Vienna, I happened to visit a local gallery where I encountered his solo exhibition. His installation, constructed entirely from straight lines while engaging the entire space, dynamically visualized the tension between order and organicity, making full use of the structure of the venue. The powerful impression I received there stayed with me, and when he later personally expressed his wish to exhibit at JITSUZAISEI, this exhibition was decided without hesitation.

Art van Triest’s work is an attempt to re-examine the “systems” and “structures” that humans have created in order to resist fundamental anxieties and fears. We use grids, classification, and rational frameworks in order to understand and control the world. But how accurately do these systems truly capture reality?

For this exhibition, he will present a new installation created during his residency, using materials sourced in Japan. Japan is a society that has been highly structured historically and culturally, while at the same time coexisting with powerful forces of nature such as earthquakes and typhoons. The material sensibility, craftsmanship, and awareness of space cultivated within this environment will deeply resonate with his exploration.

JITSUZAISEI has always valued artists’ experimentation and has sought to create exhibitions that engage directly with the space itself. This exhibition will become a place where different cultural backgrounds—the Netherlands and Japan—intersect, and where “system” and “nature,” “structure” and “reality” emerge in a state of tension.

To go against the grid is not to reject order. Rather, it is an attitude toward confronting a reality that is more complex and more multilayered.

Central to my work is the human tendency to fight our fundamental fear and insecurity with an order, a

system. I see this as a coping mechanism: an attempt to get a grip on the world around us, which

stems from a deep need for control, or the illusion of control.

With my work I want to offer a visual alternative to the simplification and standardization of our

environment. I would like to strive for a more realistic positioning of man, in which we can relate to

reality in a less linear way.
